FILTER CLEANING

Proper filter cleaning is crucial for extending your pool filter’s lifespan and maintaining clean, safe water. At Good Neighbor Pool Care, we know that without regular maintenance, your pool can suffer from poor water quality, reduced efficiency, and costly repairs. A clean filter keeps your pool sparkling and running smoothly.

Your pool’s filter acts as the kidney of your entire filtration system, trapping dirt, microscopic debris, body oils, and sunscreen. When it becomes clogged, your entire pool system has to work twice as hard to circulate water. This not only puts unnecessary strain on your pool pump but also prevents sanitizing chemicals from distributing evenly, leading to sudden algae blooms and hazy water.

WHY REGULAR FILTER CLEANING MATTERS

For optimal performance, professional filter cleaning is recommended every six months for D.E. filters and every 3–6 months for cartridge filters. Factors like pool use, environmental debris, and weather conditions can impact how often cleaning is needed. Rising pressure on your filter’s gauge is a sign of reduced water flow and poor circulation, which can harm water quality and system performance. Regular cleaning ensures your pool stays efficient and effective.

It’s important to know filter cleaning is not the same as backwashing. While backwashing offers quick relief, it doesn’t remove oils, debris, and contaminants that build up over time. Professional cleaning provides a deeper, more thorough solution to protect your pool’s health..

 BENEFITS OF PROFESSIONAL FILTER CLEANING

Investing in routine, professional filter maintenance offers significant advantages for both your backyard oasis and your wallet:

  • Lower Energy Bills: When a filter is clean, water flows freely. This reduces the workload on your pool pump, translating to lower monthly electricity consumption.
  • Extended Equipment Lifespan: High filter pressure strains pump motors and internal grid assemblies. Regular cleanings prevent premature equipment failure and stave off costly replacements.
  • Superior Water Clarity & Health: Removing deeply embedded bacteria, algae spores, and organic waste ensures your water stays crystal clear, safe, and soft on the skin.
  • Chemical Efficiency: A clean filter allows your sanitizer (like chlorine) to work effectively on the pool itself, rather than fighting trapped organic matter inside the filter tank. This saves you money on chemical treatments.

FAQS ABOUT FILTER CLEANING

As a general rule, cartridge filters should be completely broken down and cleaned every 3 to 6 months, while D.E. (diatomaceous earth) filters require a deep cleaning every 6 months. However, heavy usage, significant landscaping debris, or a recent battle with algae can mean your filter needs to be serviced sooner.

Backwashing is an excellent temporary fix to lower high pressure, but it isn’t a substitute for a manual clean. Backwashing only removes a portion of the trapped dirt and does not remove the stubborn body oils, sunscreen films, and calcium scaling that build up directly on the filter elements over time.

The most reliable indicator is your pool pump’s pressure gauge; if it reads 8–10 PSI above its clean, baseline starting pressure, it’s time for a cleaning. Other common signs include noticeably cloudy or dull water, weaker water flow coming out of your pool jets, or an uptick in algae growth despite having balanced chemical levels.

A standard, professional filter breakdown and deep cleaning typically takes between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the type of filter (Cartridge vs. D.E.) and the amount of debris buildup. Our team works efficiently to minimize any downtime so you can get back to enjoying your pool as quickly as possible.
