Freeze Protection

FREEZE PROTECTION SERVICES

We want to keep your pool healthy and running during all seasons, but extreme weather sometimes calls for a different approach. The February 2021 deep freeze caused significant damage to pools across the region, leaving many homeowners with expensive repairs. At Good Neighbor Pool Care, we want to help you avoid that in the future. That’s why we’ve partnered with other local pool professionals to share the best practices for freeze protection, ensuring your pool stays in great shape no matter how cold it gets. Serving McKinney, Melissa, Anna, Texas, and surrounding communities, we’re here to help you stay prepared.

TIPS TO PREVENT FREEZE DAMAGE:

  • Run Your Pool Pump Continuously: Freeze protection equipped systems will keep your pool pump running 24/7 during freezing temperatures to maintain water circulation and prevent pipes from freezing.  Call us today to see if you have this important and money saving feature on your equipment or to test your current setup.
  • Ensure Proper Water Flow: Consistent water movement is key. Stagnant water in pipes is more likely to freeze.
  • Insulate Your Pool and Equipment: If necessary, use insulated blankets to cover your pool equipment carefully, leaving the motors uncovered for fire protection.  We have seen most major issues occur on pipes and valves that were unprotected with reduced or no flow.
  • Inspect Equipment for Weak Points: Check for leaks, cracks, or weak spots in your pool equipment before the cold weather hits. Fixing these issues early can save you from costly damage later.
  • Monitor the Weather: Stay ahead of the forecast and prepare your pool before temperatures drop below freezing.

While no solution can completely eliminate the risk of freeze damage, following these tips can significantly reduce the chances of costly repairs. For more detailed guidance, watch our video or feel free to consult with our experts. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—we at Good Neighbor Pool Care are here to help you protect your pool and keep it running smoothly year-round!

BENEFITS OF PROFESSIONAL FREEZE PROTECTION

Investing in preventative freeze care offers critical structural and financial peace of mind. By proactively securing your pool equipment pad, you unlock several essential advantages:

  • Prevention of Catastrophic Financial Loss: Replacing a burst heater manifold, cracked filter tank, or shattered pump housing can quickly rack up thousands of dollars in sudden repair bills. Preventative maintenance is a fraction of the cost of emergency replacements.
  • Preservation of Equipment Warranties: Major pool equipment manufacturers explicitly state that damage resulting from freezing conditions is not covered under standard product warranties. Professional safeguards ensure your equipment stays intact and your warranties remain valid.
  • Protection Against Underground Mainline Leaks: When a hard freeze penetrates the topsoil, stagnant water in underground plumbing lines can burst deep beneath your yard or pool decking. Pinpointing and repairing underground leaks requires invasive, expensive demolition that proper winter circulation prevents.
  • Stress-Free Winter Months: Instead of frantically running out to your equipment pad in the middle of a midnight freezing rainstorm to check on your pumps, you can trust that an automated, professionally calibrated system is already handling the work for you.

FAQS ABOUT FREEZE PROTECTION

Freeze protection systems are typically set to trigger automatically when ambient outdoor air temperatures drop to 34°F (1°C). Even though water officially freezes at 32°F, setting the threshold slightly higher provides a safe buffer zone. This accommodates rapid temperature drops and accounts for localized wind-chill factors around exposed equipment pads.

If a winter storm causes a power outage, your automated freeze protection pumps will stop running, putting your stagnant equipment at immediate risk. In this emergency scenario, you must immediately turn off the breaker to the pool pad, pull the internal drain plugs from your pump basket, filter tank, and heater, and open the air relief valve. This allows the captive water to drain out safely before it can freeze and expand inside the equipment.

Your pool filtration and booster pumps must run continuously 24/7 for the entire duration of the freezing weather. Do not turn the pumps off until outdoor temperatures have risen safely and consistently above 34°F. Attempting to save on electricity by turning off the pumps during the day while temperatures hover near freezing can cause instant ice blockages in thin plumbing lines.

While a pool heater can keep water temperatures above freezing, relying on it as a primary freeze defense is highly energy-intensive and expensive. Continuous water circulation via your filtration pump is the primary defense against ice formation. The mechanical movement of the water keeps it liquid; the heater is generally only utilized in specialized situations or to maintain basic structural warmth.
